Snake Removal in Florence

Last reviewed September 8, 2026 against SC DNR published rules and federal statute. How we research this site.

Most snakes found around Florence homes are harmless and beneficial. A few are not, and the difference matters.

Florence specifically

Blackwater rivers and swamp run through this whole region, so snakes are part of the landscape rather than an event. Most are harmless. South Carolina does have venomous species and the coastal plain is where the water-associated ones are, which makes identification the part worth paying for rather than guessing at from a phone photograph.

Illustrative Snakes follow rodents. A snake at a foundation vent usually means something else got in first, which is why removing the snake alone rarely ends it.

How you know it is snakes

  • A shed skin in a crawlspace, garage or shed
  • A snake seen in the garage, laundry, crawlspace or under a step
  • Rodent activity that suddenly stops: snakes follow their food
  • Winding tracks in dust or fine soil

Why it matters

  • Venomous species do occur in this region and misidentification is common in both directions
  • Any suspected venomous bite is an emergency: call 911, do not attempt to catch the snake
  • Killing snakes is often counterproductive and, for some protected species, illegal
Need this dealt with in Florence?

Somebody has to look at the property to answer that. How many entry points or burrows there are, how hard they are to get at, and whether young are present is what sets the price, and none of it can be judged from a description. How removal actually works

Identification first, then physical removal with proper hooks and tubes. Longer term the answer is habitat and rodent control; a house with no mice is far less interesting to a snake.

Timing

Peak activity in spring and autumn, plus hot spells when snakes move into cool crawlspaces and garages.

What it costs

$150 – $400 for removal of a single snake

Removal is only part of it. Where an animal has been in an attic for a while, the contaminated insulation and droppings are usually the larger bill: what attic restoration involves →

What South Carolina law requires

South Carolina works through depredation permits rather than a single operator licence: an SCDNR depredation permit is required to trap or take wildlife out of season. Licensed wildlife control operators can apply for and work under depredation permits that are not available to the general public, which is what lets them handle species (alligators among them) that a property owner cannot legally touch. Animals taken under a depredation permit may not be relocated, sold, traded, exchanged or bartered. Full South Carolina rules →

Snake questions

How much does Snake removal cost in Florence?

$150 – $400 for removal of a single snake. The spread comes down to how many entry points there are, how hard the roof or crawlspace is to reach, and whether young are present. Anyone quoting a firm price before seeing the property is guessing.

How quickly can someone come out?

Most snakes calls in Florence are handled within a day or two. If an animal is loose inside your living space, or there is a bite or scratch involved, say so when you make contact; that changes the priority.

Can I just do it myself?

Sometimes, legally speaking. But the two things that go wrong are sealing an entry point while young are still inside, and handling an animal that turns out to be a rabies vector. Both are expensive mistakes, and one is dangerous.

Is there a wrong time of year for this?

Peak activity in spring and autumn, plus hot spells when snakes move into cool crawlspaces and garages.
