Skunk Removal in Florence

Last reviewed September 8, 2026 against SC DNR published rules and federal statute. How we research this site.

Skunks den under porches, decks and sheds, and you usually know about it before you see one.

Florence specifically

Under a crawlspace, a shed or a porch, and the sandy soil makes the excavation easy. The thing that makes it worse here than elsewhere is the crawlspace: a discharge under a floor on a humid coastal plain does not air out, it soaks into the joists and the ductwork and stays.

Illustrative Under a deck or shed is the classic skunk den. The fan of loose soil at the entrance is the giveaway, and it is visible long before the smell is.

How you know it is skunks

  • The obvious: a persistent musky smell around a deck or crawlspace
  • Cone-shaped digs in the lawn where they have been hunting grubs
  • A burrow entrance at the edge of a porch, slab or shed
  • Sightings around dusk; skunks are slow-moving and largely nocturnal

Why it matters

  • Rabies vector
  • Spray contaminating a crawlspace or HVAC intake, which is extremely difficult to remove
  • Burrowing that undermines porch footings and slab edges
  • Digging damage across the lawn during grub season
Need this dealt with in Florence?

Somebody has to look at the property to answer that. How many entry points or burrows there are, how hard they are to get at, and whether young are present is what sets the price, and none of it can be judged from a description. How removal actually works

Careful trapping (skunks spray when startled, so this genuinely is a job for someone who has done it before) followed by burying an exclusion barrier along the structure edge.

Cut-away of a one-way exclusion door fitted over an entry hole A wall in cross-section with the attic on the left and outside on the right. A hinged flap is fitted over the entry hole on the outer face. An animal pushes the flap open from inside and leaves; the flap falls shut behind it, and a stop below prevents it opening inwards, so the animal cannot get back in. INSIDE: ATTIC OR CRAWLSPACE OUTSIDE WALL STOP: IT ONLY SWINGS OUT HINGED AT THE TOP OUT: ONE WAY AND NEVER BACK IN
The whole trade is in this one drawing. A one-way door lets whatever is up there leave on its own and shuts behind it. No cage, no relocation, nothing to come back to. It is also why sealing the hole is the last step: seal it first and you have shut the animal, and any young, inside your wall.

Timing

Worst in spring, when females den to give birth, and again in autumn as they look for somewhere to overwinter.

What it costs

$300 – $550 typical

Removal is only part of it. Where an animal has been in an attic for a while, the contaminated insulation and droppings are usually the larger bill: what attic restoration involves →

What South Carolina law requires

South Carolina works through depredation permits rather than a single operator licence: an SCDNR depredation permit is required to trap or take wildlife out of season. Licensed wildlife control operators can apply for and work under depredation permits that are not available to the general public, which is what lets them handle species (alligators among them) that a property owner cannot legally touch. Animals taken under a depredation permit may not be relocated, sold, traded, exchanged or bartered. Full South Carolina rules →

Skunk questions

How much does Skunk removal cost in Florence?

$300 – $550 typical. The spread comes down to how many entry points there are, how hard the roof or crawlspace is to reach, and whether young are present. Anyone quoting a firm price before seeing the property is guessing.

How quickly can someone come out?

Most skunks calls in Florence are handled within a day or two. If an animal is loose inside your living space, or there is a bite or scratch involved, say so when you make contact; that changes the priority.

Can I just do it myself?

Sometimes, legally speaking. But the two things that go wrong are sealing an entry point while young are still inside, and handling an animal that turns out to be a rabies vector. Both are expensive mistakes, and one is dangerous.

Is there a wrong time of year for this?

Worst in spring, when females den to give birth, and again in autumn as they look for somewhere to overwinter.
